Henry John Chitty Harper was installed as the first Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand on Christmas Day 1856. From that date, until his resignation in 1890, all his Official Acts were recorded in his Bishop’s Register.

The Register has no indication of Confirmations prior to 1860, although evidence has been found in Parish Files. After 1861 Confirmations are only recorded in the Register by date and the number of individuals confirmed.
From 1856 until 1870 the area that is now the Diocese of Dunedin (south of the Waitaki River) was part of the Diocese of Christchurch.

The locations listed are:

Akaroa Temporary Church
A small Church opened in October 1852 in Church Street. Replaced in 1863 in Rue Balgueri.

Avonside Temporary Church
A small Church of cob, opened in 1855, that was gradually replaced piece by piece in stone. Destroyed by the Christchurch Earthquakes of 2010-2011

Church of the Parochial District of Waikouaiti
This Church was consecrated by Bishop Harper after the confirmation, dedicated to St John the Evangelist.

Dunedin
The Otago Witness of April 13th 1861 indicates a Conformation Service will be held in Dunedin, but does not state the location.

Holy Trinity, Lyttelton
The second church of stone consecrated in April 1860 and destroyed by the Christchurch Earthquakes of 2010-2011

Kaiapoi Temporary Church
The original Kaiapoi Church was moved from Darnley Square to its present site in 1860, as its location on a sandhill was unsafe. There have been subsequent additions, but the original nave remains.

Papanui Temporary Church
This Church of timber from the Papanui Bush was built in late 1852, and replaced in 1876.

Rangiora
A small Church was built of pit-sawn timber in 1860. Here have been subsequent additions and alterations.

St John the Evangelist, Lower Heathcote.
Lower Heathcote included the area now known as Woolston. The cob Church of St John the Evangelist, Woolston was built in 1859 and later replaced.
St Michael, Christchurch
The first Church of St Michael and All Angels was consecrated in 1859.

St Peter, Riccarton
Originally in wood and consecrated in 1858, it was replaced, piece by piece in stone.

Tokomairiro
This refers to the area now known as Milton in the Diocese of Dunedin.
