A Bishop’s Register has one purpose – to record the Official Acts of a Bishop. One of those acts is the Laying on of Hands in Confirmation. Unusually, during 1860-1861 the first Bishop, Henry John Chitty Harper, recorded the names of those he confirmed within the Register.

During the rest of his episcopate, only the number of those confirmed was included in the Register. The names of the candidates, where they have survived, are included in the records of individual parishes.

During this period the portion of the South Island that would later become the Diocese of Dunedin, was within the boundaries of the Diocese of Christchurch.
