In 1860-1861 some names were recorded in the Bishop’s Register, however other records can be found, somewhat erratically within parish records.

Records have survived for the Parish of Lyttelton for 1855-18 and are all contained in one volume. There are only entries for the sections for Admission to Communion and Confirmation.

Not everything on a particular line is complete, however the following information will be useful.

The signature G A Selwyn, is George Augustus Selwyn , Bishop of New Zealand who was visiting Lyttelton in the Southern Cross in November 1855.

The signature H J Christchurch is Henry John Chitty Harper, Bishop of Christchurch. Where a particular entry is not signed after 1856 it can be assumed that Harper was the confirming Bishop

The signature BW Dudley is Benjamin Wooley Dudley, Incumbent of Lyttelton 1851-1859.

The signature Fras. Knowles is Francis Knowles, Acting Curate 1859-1860 and the Incumbent of Lyttelton 1860-1871.

The date of Admission to Communion varies. It can occur immediately after Confirmation, or some months or years later. In some instances the record indicates that it occurred before Confirmation. Where there is no date of Admission to Communion, there are any number of explanations: it was not recorded, it is recorded elsewhere or the candidate was never admitted to Communion.
