Prior to this, the Nelson area had been a part of the Diocese of New Zealand. It is formally described as the northern portion of the South Island of New Zealand and adjacent islands.
It includes the Nelson, Blenheim, and West Coast of the South Island regions. The Cathedral of Christ Church is in Nelson City.
From time to time parishes on its border with the Diocese of Christchurch have moved from one diocese to another.
