Otago Southland
Main
Collection NameOtago SouthlandDescriptionThe Diocese of Dunedin includes the Otago and Southland regions, and adjacent islands, and was founded in 1868 with its northern boundary the Waitaki River. Prior to this, there was a Rural Deanery Board for the Otago and Southland area, but the Bishop of Christchurch, HJC Harper, had jurisdiction.
Harper took services as far south as Bluff, and maintained a register known as the Country Baptism Book which covered Otago and Southland as well as Canterbury West Coast. This has been digitized with the Diocese of Christchurch registers.
The original registers for the Diocese of Dunedin are on deposit from the Diocese of Dunedin, in the Hocken Library. The Hocken Library has enabled us to make scans from copies of their transcriptions of these volumes. These are mostly the marriage registers but include one baptism register.
